"How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything!"
Powerful Stuff! The first time I heard that quote, courtesy of David Wolfe, the raw foods nutritional expert and author, I had to really think about it. Could it really be true that how I do the slightest, most mundane thing in my life is how I do everything?
So, if I start my morning off by just going through the motions - getting dressed, brushing my teeth, making a smoothie, getting lunches ready, taking the kids to school - AND I'm just mindlessly performing these duties, what does that say about me? Is that how I live the rest of my life?
It says that I'm starting my day without thinking. It says that I'm just trying to get through my to-do list without paying much attention to the big picture. It says that tomorrow and the day after that will just be more of the same.
What if, I paused in the morning? What if I thought about what I was doing? What if I added an attitude of purpose and presence to the usual routines? What if how I do anything, no matter how mundane, is how I do everything?
Well, I still need to complete my daily responsibilities, BUT what if, while I'm making my smoothie and the kids' lunches, I envision a beautiful and purposeful day? What if I take the time to write down what I want out of life and actually look at how my day fulfills that?
Hmmm, how easy would it be to wake up and focus on everything you're grateful for? What if you spent five minutes every morning thinking about all of the wonderful things that you actually have going for you. Got your health? Like waking up in a free country? Have a job despite the economy? Got a great mate? Have healthy kids? Have eyes that can see all of the beauty around you? Anyone love you? Do you love anyone?
Okay, now for the next five minutes of your morning routine, how about focusing on the big picture for your life. What do you really want? If you don't know what you want, just focus on what you DON'T want, and that will help you to figure it out. Do you really love the health field but you have to practice accounting to make a living? How do you actually want to spend your days? What if you formulated a plan to do some small action each day that would lead you closer to your goal? What if you didn't live in a mindset that imprisons you?
At the end of the day, ask yourself what you learned today? How have you helped others? How has today added to the quality of your life? Was today an investment in your future? Are you creating your own destiny, or are you letting the day-to-day responsibilities weigh you down so much that you've forgotten who you are and what's REALLY important to you.
Make today a great day! And remember, "How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything"!
