Angelina Jolie - What does our Obsession say about us?

"Angelina Jolie kisses her brother", "Angelina catches Brad kissing the Nanny", "Angelina pregnant with twins". It goes on and on and on and on... You get the picture. We can't even checkout at Safeway without a weekly update on the couple. And if that's not enough, there's always an article about Jennifer Aniston and how she's either moving on with her life or she's still in love with Brad. Okay, as much as I hate to admit it, the latest article does tend to catch my eye. Thankfully, I just stick to the headlines and don't need to open up the mags.

If an alien landed on our planet and caught a whiff of our obsession with Hollywood, I think he'd be pretty disgusted. Who'd stick around to find out about this planet? What kind of values do we have? Why are we so obsessed with the Hollywood gossip? Are our own lives so boring that we have to live through the rich and famous?

This whole obsession has me wondering... Why don't we see more hype about people who are really interesting? People who are everyday heroes? People like firemen and women, soldiers, police officers - people who risk their lives every single day so that we can be safe. What about teachers, doctors, and nurses? What about the eye surgeon who saved my vision by performing a revolutionary operation? You don't read about him. Is it really true that this isn't as interesting and important as Angelina being jealous of Jen?

There are so many everyday un-sung heroes. Perhaps we could appreciate them a little more. How about giving an extra smile and some understanding next time you see your child's teacher? How about appreciating the people and the miracles that we are witness to each and every day? How about being thankful and actively creating our own lives rather than living through others? You know what they say, "garbage in, garbage out". Make today a great day; choose wisely what you focus on.
